The Athens Drive Theater Department presented a night of one act plays to allow students to express creativity and raise money for the upcoming musical, Legally Blonde. The event showcased various actors from Athens Drive High School through comedy, drama and improvisation. The event, 7 p.m. Feb. 13, costed three dollars to enter and consisted of numerous acts from all grades at Athens.
Seniors Nicky Taylor and Sabrina Palazzo planned and produced the event in hopes of supporting the theater and raising interest in theater arts at Athens. Three acts performed, the first titled “Collage,” an emotional drama that reflects the feelings and actions that many high school kids embody and can relate to. To compliment the first act, the theater also presented an improvisation from “Mission Improvable” and comedic piece entitled “Hard Candy.”
“[Hard Candy] is a witty and hilarious show about many different and weird applicants applying for a job at a candy company,” said Taylor.
Although the event was a way to fundraise for the department, it also allowed students to experience acting and theater arts in a relaxed setting.
“We wanted to give actors another outlet to showcase what they can do to the community, because the only two major ways students can is through our fall play and spring musical,” said Taylor.
The release of “Legally Blonde,” rapidly approaching for the Theater Department, requires a lot of work and funds to make the show possible. The theater department sold a total of 105 tickets and earned 800 dollars to put towards the musical. With the revenue from the one act plays will allow the theater to create and showcase an exciting musical.
“Every person who comes and sees our show will be helping to make Legally Blonde our best musical yet!” said Taylor.
The One Act Plays served as a practice for “Legally Blonde,” helping students develop acting skills in front of a crowd. Workshops for “Legally Blonde” were held Feb. 23 and 24, and the preceding day the theater held auditions. The event allowed students to spark an interest in acting and possibly partake in the musical.
“It was a great overall night and experience, the shows went well and the actors really knew their stuff,” said Taylor.
