“13 Reasons Why” is an original Netflix series that was released in March 31, 2017. The series is about  seventeen-year old Hannah Baker who attends Liberty High School and goes through many traumatic events including rape, sexual harassment and bullying. She commits suicide and records thirteen tapes, each explaining a reason for her decision of taking her own life.

Each tape tells a story about one specific person who impacted Hannah’s life. The tapes are passed down to each person who was on the tapes and eventually falls into the hands of a junior who also attends Liberty High School Clay Jensen.

The series was based on the 2007 novel “13 Reasons Why” by Jay Asher. The general story leaves behind an important message most people miss out on or generally do not discuss, which is rape and sexual assault.

According to the American Psychological Association, suicide is the third leading cause of death for youth ages 15 to 24. In most cases, depression, bullying and anxiety are causes of suicide.

Many students deal with these issues everyday but do not seek for help. According to Healthline, one in three U.S. children reports bullying at school, and one in seventeen reports of experiencing online bullying. Bullying can happen anywhere and at anytime to anyone.

“13 Reasons Why” shows the audience that bullying can affect someone more than someone would think and does impact others. The show also shows how bullying and sexual harassment do result in consequences that could be fatal.

“I think the show is really good and it sends a really strong message to all those teenagers out there who are going through tough times,” said Zahra Hussain, freshman.

Hannah Baker’s situation from “13 Reasons Why” was a good example that even the little things can affect someone and overtime it piles all up and could result in something negative.

“I think the show is great and sends an important message about suicide and bullying. It also shows why a person like Hannah Baker should have got help,” said Temeya Singleton, freshman.

Any student that is going through tough times should know they are not alone. In “13 Reasons Why” Hannah Baker failed to do this. It is never too late to get help and students should know it is okay to reach out for help.

“I feel that Hannah Baker should have asked for help and if she did things would’ve turned out differently,” said Singleton.
