Does photoshopping affect society?

Technological advancements have introduced editing programs, such as Photoshop, which are used to modify pictures. Companies have been using photoshop to change the appearance of people to get the “perfect look.” As a result, this gives viewers a false sense of reality and perfection. It can change how someone feels about their body image and is destructive to society.

While photoshopping has increased significantly in popularity, more and more teens have been drawn to the idea of perfecting their body, producing a false image to gain “likes” and “retweets.” Social media has been used to promote photoshopping because it provides fake pictures to society that make people become insecure.

Various women in magazines have had their bodies photoshopped so that they look “perfect” and give people the illusion of the “perfect body image.”  Some women in Sports Illustrated magazines are photoshopped on every inch of their body and have their faces edited to “look good.” Also, Kim Kardashian’s “#Breaktheinternet” was edited to make her body parts look more appealing.

“The retouching is excessive. I do not look like that and more importantly I don’t desire to look like that. I actually have a Polaroid that the photographer gave me on the day of the shoot… I can tell you they’ve reduced the size of my legs by about a third. For my money it looks pretty good the way it was taken,” said Kate Winslet of her 2003 cover issue of GQ.

This is a world full of comparisons made between each other and harsh commentary on images people feel strongly about. By photoshopping role models’ pictures, the fans are left with a puzzling and impossible appearance.

This deception has led to people stressing out about how they look and can result in eating disorders such as anorexia or bulimia. People care too much about their own appearance and should not try to look like others because then they lose their uniqueness. Putting on a fake facade can not only deceive others, but that person as well.  No one should try to be something they are not.

On a positive note, celebrities such as Demi Lovato have promoted body empowerment. She has expressed on Instagram that she is against body image among many different celebrities. This generation is interested in bettering their physical appearances when the focus needs to be directed towards mental and immaterial appearances.
