Women, If President, Apparently Will Always Start World Wars

Fortunately, when “women can’t be president” is searched online, most of the pages that come up are satirical articles basically explaining why the claims are ridiculous. However, there are still those who believe the statement still stands, such as Bill O’Reilly, who says, “There’s gotta be some downside to having a woman president, right? Something that may not fit with that office?” Well, there has always also been a downside to having a male president, but there have been 44 of those so far.

Now, Hillary Clinton has announced that she will be running for president, and an influx of criticism and sexism has flooded the Internet because she is of the female gender. Yet, despite beliefs, there have been plenty of successful female world leaders – just not in America. One of these notable women from other countries are Benazir Bhutto, a former Pakistani Prime Minister. Forty-nine countries so far have had women in charge, leaving the United States and 145 other countries in the dust.

While there have been plenty of women that held positions of power in government, the modern world has been scarce of this streak. Currently, there are only 22 women holding governmental leadership positions, something found apparently surprising since the record amount has been only 20 female world leaders at one time. The United States ranks 69th among countries with percentage of women in government, being beat out by countries such as Afghanistan and Uganda. Also in America, women make up 51% of the population (whoa, more than half!) but make up only 17% of Congress… yikes. and minority women make only 6.2% of that 17%, which does not seem very progressive or comforting on the state of American politics

These percentages only brush the surface of a system that fails women on more than just levels of governmental positions. Internalized societal and systematic sexist behaviors in America only support this system and various ideologies, such as the thought that sexism downright doesn’t exist anymore. So when women such as Hillary Clinton even make an attempt to take progressive steps, irrelevant and asinine statements come into play. And while these statements can be meaningless, satirical jokes, they can potentially be harmfully influential in the long run.

By the way, Hillary Clinton is in menopausal age, so you don’t really have to worry about her “time of the month” starting the next world war.
