A theatrical production behind the scenes is more than just seeing people reading lines of words that are meant to be perfected. It is more complex than that. It is called technical theatre, which consists of set construction, publicity, lighting, stage crew and more.
To become a part of the technical crew there is a an application that the students are required to fill out. On the application students have to put down all of the productions that they have ever been involved with. Before students begin to work on set, they have to complete a required tool training if not already completed. Even though other events go on at school the sets are still being built.
“Sets just don’t pop up,” said Andre Barbosa, freshman.
Set construction takes weeks to plan, build and perfect. The reasoning behind it is to make sure the actors are comfortable, and it appeals to the audience. Students may spend several hours after school building. The set may be changed or questioned at any time during the construction for both the actors and audience.
“My goal is to become a member of the Thespian society,” said Barbosa.
To become a Thespian, students are required to have been in at least two productions, whether it was a role onstage or backstage.
“Musicals, because who doesn’t want a world where everyone bursts into song and dance, ” said Burgandy Trimmer, Athens Drive 10-year theatre teacher.
Trimmer has directed 19 productions and does not plan on stopping as she is directing Athens’ next musical “Legally Blonde.”
