In the past weeks, a few students attempted to tailgate during lunch in the Junior parking lot at Athens Drive. Prepped with chairs, lunch, speakers for music and mini hockey tables, they were ready to kick back and relax.
“We thought of this idea at the beginning of the year and just never followed through with it,” said Jack Rogers, junior.
Rogers, Worth Lineberry, Jason Rash and Jordan Cooper, juniors, who all took part in the tailgating, thought of the idea while they were hanging out and agreed to follow through when they got the chance.
“Going and buying food off campus is just way too expensive,” said Lineberry.
Many students complain about the expenses of going off campus. The price of gas, the price of food and the time it takes are all aspects that need to be taken into consideration. Most students have resorted to packing food from home and driving somewhere or sitting in their cars. However, these actions are against the rules.
“This is the next best thing to do for lunch over the other options,” said Cooper.
The lunch room is viewed as a place for underclassmen. There is not much room for anyone else anyways and it is relatively overcrowded. The guys quickly decided that eating in the cafeteria was not an option either.
The day they finally decided to tailgate everything ran smoothly. However, a couple of times later, a security guard realized what was happening and immediately told them to stop.
“What they were doing was against a student …rule, so I had to tell them to stop,” said Wanda “De” Graffinried also known as “Big Mama,” Security Officer.
The boys were forced to stop what they were doing immediately. However, they still strive to find creative ways to have a fun lunch and not spend too much money.
“Big Mama told us we had to stop tailgating during lunch, which stinks, but we do not have any say in the topic,” said Rash.
They continue to tailgate after school. The boys plan on looking into the topic more and work to be able to tailgate during school once again.
