Promposals

Prom season has come and gone and so has the added stress of finding a date, asking this date, getting the dress, matching the tux, planning prom night, and executing everything. These trends are something very recent because when parents were in high school, it was not a big deal at all to get asked to prom and they often just assumed they were going with certain people. Most of the pressure from prom is put on the guys, because ‘promposals’ – how one asks their date to prom- have become a crucial part of the experience.

Timing is key when planning to ask a girl to prom. A guy has to make sure he can surprise the girl and get her to come over or find out where she is without giving away the surprise. Every year, junior and senior boys are pressured to come up with the most original ways to ask their dates to prom. First, one has to come up with ideas they have not seen before; this can be difficult because most girls have seen plenty of promposals already on social networking sites. Guys spend a lot of time looking for special ideas they can make their own. Thinking of ways to ask girls to prom in addition to buying flowers, chocolate, candy and other surprises can take up a good amount of time and add extra stress.

Guys coming up with ideas does not only put stress on them, but also puts stress on a girl’s friends. Friends are said to know best about how the girl would want to be asked, but sometimes girls are unpredictable. Some may want a big surprise while others want to be warned so they are not caught off guard. The biggest surprise is when a girl gets asked by someone she had no idea about, this can be good or bad depending on the situation.

Overall, promposals have become a very big part of junior and senior year for both teenage boys and girls. Although promposals are fun and surprising, it does put a large amount of pressure on boys asking their dates and stress in the months from February to May. This year, there have been multiple twitter accounts that have come out with ideas on how to ask girls to prom with pictures of many promposals. Some schools in Wake county created their own accounts to show off their student’s promposals. This makes it hard for guys who have not asked their dates to prom because most of the good ideas have been taken and guys have to make sure they are asking their date in a way she would like simple or very surprising.
