A major gas leak occurred Tuesday, October 22 on Hillsborough Street and I-440, near the North Carolina State Fair. The result was a road closure, which could last until Thursday. Firefighters appeared around the scene around 9 a.m., completely blocking Interstate 440. According to officials with the Raleigh Fire Department, this led to an instant closure of the surrounding gas leak area, completely blocking off the interstate.

According to Enbridge Gas, a construction crew struck a gas line the morning of Oct. 22g, and repair crews were quickly on the scene. There were no injuries, but commuters found hefty delays on I-440. This blocked a route to the fairgrounds, leading to high traffic wait times. Authorities plan to implement more safety precautions and measures to prevent future incidents like this.

Local authorities and fire departments cooperated to fix the leak as fast as possible. A spokesperson for Enbridge Gas said they hope to have the gas leak repaired by Tuesday or earlier.
