On April 21, 2025, the Vatican announced deeply troubling news. Pope Francis passed away from a cerebral hemorrhage and a heart attack after battling health complications for years. His passing was devastating to the global Catholic community, as he was the embodiment of humility and compassion for many. His commitment to inclusivity and peace characterized Pope Francis’ time in the Vatican, and he motivated many young Catholics to take action in their churches.
“Pope Francis taught humility and love for everyone. He lived a mundane life; for example, he had a simple apartment and wore clothes that were not extravagant. I think that shows a lot about his character, choosing a simpler life closer to the people instead of one surrounded by materialistic items,” said Daniel Hrehor, Social Studies teacher at Athens Drive.
Pope Francis was known for emphasizing that the children of the Catholic faith are not the future, but the present. His encouragement translated into tangible actions for many. This meant new opportunities for Carolina Flores Lopez, a student at Athens, to serve and lead in her church.
“Thanks to his efforts, my church began to implement more intentional ways for the youth to become more involved. Now I am an Assistant Catechist for kids aged 12 to 14, I am also an altar server, a Youth Ministry peer leader, and part of my church’s theater ministry in Spanish. I also read scripture in Spanish, English, and now French,” said Flores Lopez.
Beyond youth engagement, Pope Francis was known for his steps toward increasing inclusivity. His welcoming of members of the LGBTQ+ community marked a historical shift in Catholicism, a shift that emphasizes love and embodies a progressive nature.
“He opened up doors for many homosexual people and preached that they should not be vilified for who they are. I believe this is the true message that Jesus wanted to spread: to love everyone regardless of conflict of interests,” said Hrehor.
Now, following the period of mourning, a new pope was elected by the College of Cardinals. His name is Pope Leo XIV. For many Catholics, the quick election of a new pope carries a sense of hope.
“I was very pleased to have witnessed a historic event once more in my lifetime. I was especially happy that the new pope was named within two days following the conclave; this signals a step in the right direction because the Vatican was united in their decision,” said Flores Lopez.
Though Pope Francis left behind an irreplaceable legacy, there is confidence that the new pope will build on the strong foundation his predecessor laid, especially when it comes to inclusivity and youth involvement.
“I really hope he continues Pope Francis’ message to involve the youth more, as well as keep showing everyone kindness and acceptance regardless of labels,” said Flores Lopez.
Despite the grief surrounding Pope Francis’ death, many Catholics have gained an unwavering sense of loyalty to their faith throughout his reign. Catholics all around the world are moving past their grief and taking time to acknowledge his contributions. As the church moves forward, it does so with remembrance of the late Pope Francis, who devoted over a decade of his life to his faith.
“Pope Francis helped shape the Church into one of love, generosity, and grace. I have full faith that the new pope will continue spreading the message of peace and hope to all people,” said Flores Lopez.
