2018 Gradman

The contestants for 2018 Gradman

Gradman took place on March 29 at 7 p.m. Gradman is a talent show and resembles beauty pageants. 12 seniors are nominated and voted for categories by the senior class. This year’s theme is “Keeping Up with the Gradmen.” The categories include Mr. Athletic, Mr. Cute and even Mr. Wild & Crazy. The event will include an opening dance number, talents and interviews which are all scored by judges. The winner donates the money raised by each contestant through fundraising, selling tickets and selling shirts to a charity of their choice.

Christopher Remaley, math teacher and senior adviser, runs Gradman. Gradman began in 1998, and he has been organizing this event since 2000. He started by just helping, but realized he wanted to be more involved after he realized how fun it was. Remaley receives help from Scott Maxwell, math teacher who totals the live scoring from the judges.

“Once my senior advisor left in 2000, I just sort of expanded and tried to improve every year and just make it more outrageous each year since then,” said Remaley.

Remaley says the biggest problem involved with organizing this event is having to work with everyone’s schedule because each contestant has extracurricular activities such as sports and jobs.

Remaley’s favorite memories of Gradman include when a Mr. Athletic was going to chop wood on stage. They had been practicing at different locations but then they finally tried it on stage. Because of how the stage is made, it kept “bouncing” and the contestant was not able to cut through the wood. Another fun memory includes bringing a car onto the stage. Remaley also mentioned that over a three month period of practicing, the guys form a special bond.

“My favorite memory is the practices because we mess around and it’s fun seeing the show become better and better every week,” said Nestor Flores, Mr. Best-All-Around. “I decided to be on [Gradman] because I thought it would be a really fun experience, and it’s nice to know I can help others in need.”
