Students give back to the local environment through this Athens club

Environmental Club has continued to help students learn more about the environment around them and what they can do to help it. Emily Williams, junior, is the president of Environmental Club, which is dedicated to helping the surrounding environment at Athens Drive continue to grow.

“Environmental Club is a club where students talk and learn more about the environment. We play games, eat food, have speakers come in and we volunteer to do clean up projects,” said Williams.

Last year, students volunteered at the Well Fed Community Garden, a multi-faceted, financially sustainable urban agriculture venture which grows organic produce. Students helped the owners weed and plant seeds, and also played with the chickens and got the opportunity to get service hours.

“This was probably the most memorable experience for me and the rest of the students last year because we got to really take action as students and do something for the environment and help out,” said Williams.

Club meetings are held the first and third thursdays of every month, in room 1714 during B lunch. During meetings students discuss current environmental events, play games and plan projects to help the environment around the Athens Drive community.

There are many positions that are held: Emily Williams as president, Danielle Puccio, sophomore, as secretary, Daniel Jacobs, senior, as treasurer, Tyrone Williamson, senior, as historian and April Grissom as advisor.

“I decided to become the advisor of the environmental science club because it promotes environmental awareness and appreciation. It is a student-led club that provides leadership opportunities and focuses on community and school projects that emphasize sustainability. Future generations are going to depend on the environmental scientists of today,” said Grissom, advisor of environmental science club.

By promoting environmental awareness, the Environmental Club has planned a school beautification project, as well as the Hemlock Bluff beautification project, Service Raleigh and a possible group trip to the local recycle plant. Students who participate and volunteer will help contribute to the surrounding community and will have the opportunity to receive multiple service hours.

“Students should come to environmental club because we enjoy meeting new people and we have a relaxed environment, it is also a great chance to help out the community and give back. By volunteering and participating in beautification projects it can also be a great way to get many service hours,” said Williams.
