Full House’s spin off series finds its place on Netflix’s new release list

Family-oriented sitcoms were widely broadcasted on multiple channels during the 1980s and 1990s, thus the creator of “Full House,” Jeff Franklin began filming its spin off, “Fuller House” in July 2015 that aimed to focus on a family whose lives change as they learn moral values and contains most of the same people as the original show.

“When people saw that this particular group of people were coming back together, I believe that they wanted to see how much this show [Fuller House] compares and plays off of the original one,” said Alyssa Nash, junior.

Full House may not have been as popular then as it is today when it ended in 1995, but reruns of the episodes had many people turning on the show in the early 2000s on the ABC [now Freeform] network.

“When I watched it, I enjoyed the comedy and the feeling of family love in the show. One thing that stood out the most is the lesson that blood does not define family, but the bonds you create with people do,” said Zoe Allardice, senior.

Today, the actors and actresses of the show have since moved on to star in other programs or films, but were just recently brought back to the Full House set as the Tanner family once more in their spin off series, Fuller House.

“I think reunion shows can be tricky,” said Lori Loughlin, who plays Aunt Becky, according to L.A. Times. “If you don’t capture the magic of what was in the past, it can really be a dud.”

According to Business Insider, the spin off show has a similar family-oriented concept as the original show. Instead of a single widowed father of three having his brother-in-law and best friend living with him to help raise his three daughters, his eldest daughter, DJ [Candace Cameron Bure], finds herself widowed and raising her three sons on her own. This time, it is her sister, Stephanie [Jodie Sweetin] and her best friend, Kimmy [Andrea Barber], living in her childhood home to help raise the boys.

“The repetition of the plot shows our modern generation like how kids and adults react to modern issues and how they solve modern problems. This shows that views from society changes over time,” said Allardice.

As DJ and her children experience the world around them, it strongly resembles that of Full House in hopes of creating a memorable television show.

The show incorporates old catchphrases, such as “how rude!” and “have mercy!” According to “The Vox,” is ‘highly predictable’ and ‘cheesy.’ For some fans this is what gives the new show its binge-watching factor.

“The plot line makes it cheesy because some of the catchphrases from Full House were already used, but all of the jokes, new and old, may also contribute to how ‘cheesy’ Fuller House can be,” said Nash.

“Fuller House” also takes place in the familiar Tanner home in San Francisco, where the old blue checkered couch still sits in the living room. The significance of the couch in the series is that it represents “dwelling on the past,” according to “Vulture.”

Fuller House drops many hints relating to the original show. The cast from the original show are not the main focus, but their roles are portrayed as they have appearances in “Fuller House.” An example is when John Stamos, who plays Uncle Jesse, sings ‘Forever’ once more to Loughlin, a song that has become a fan favorite.

“I’ve sang that song a thousand times, but that time, in that episode, was different because it wasn’t like singing to her 25 years ago,” said Stamos according to L.A. Times.

The Fuller House show itself tries to add pop culture references in order to connect to a younger audience. One episode touches base on attachment to mobile devices. To add to the show, Fuller House references “Dancing with the Stars” with a few dance numbers.

“While the Fuller House touches base on what is ‘modern,’ it includes some family values from the ‘80s and ‘90s that have not changed,” said Allardice.

Overall, Fuller House tries to contain the same ‘cheesy’ factors that made Full House successful along with the modernization of the show itself, while keeping the original plot-line of the show from the 90s. These factors will most likely contribute to the success of the spin-off on Netflix, according to “Inquistr.”

“The fact that the show is a spin off from a successful show from over 20 years ago is what makes it successful and enjoyable for me to binge watch,” said Nash.
