At Athens Drive, safety isn’t just about protection; it’s about bonding with the individuals being protected. A large part of that comes from Officer Joshua Walker, Athens Drive’s SRO (School Resource Officer), who was celebrated Feb. 11 for his dedication, professionalism, and genuine care for students.
Being able to form connections by staying in communication and getting to know different students helps educate them. It shows them that police officers are more than just people who stop drivers on the road.
“From a student perspective… It’s always something you did wrong,” Coach Connor Bayer said, “or a punishment. But Officer Walker gets to know kids, not just when they’re in trouble but for who they are.”
The Raleigh Police Department, along with the Wake County Public School System, recognized Walker, noting his positive attitude and the smile on his face every single day he’s at school. Major

Goodwin recognized not only Walker’s genuineness in wanting to be a support for students, but also the deep relationships he makes along the way with those students, because he understands how important that is for the youth.
“The relationships Officer Walker has helped build trust,” Head of the Community IMPACT and Engagement Division of the Raleigh Police Department, Major Eric Goodwin, said. “Every relationship he makes with a student is going to carry with them to the future and hopefully allow them to have more trust in the police department.”
Athens Drive principal Boshoff also recognized Walker’s large impact at school in the two years he’s been at Athens, especially on safety protocols and ensuring every student is safe on campus, as well as practicing safety rules at all times.
“He does a lot of consulting to keep our school safe…He provides a lot of guidance about how we can put the safety of students at the forefront,” Athens Drive Principal, Amanda Boshoff, said.
Walker is more than just a figure in uniform. Constantly greeting and joking with students, helping however he can outside of school, by driving students home after school, consistently checking in with students, aiding with vehicle issues, and working through incident reports, he’s everywhere he’s needed.
“Y’all helped me and taught me a lot as well. Y’all taught me how to be humble, how to always tell the truth, and how to be outgoing.” Walker thanked the students for their impact on him, stating, “Y’all do so much for the surrounding community, and y’all should have so much pride in what y’all do. Thank y’all so much,” said Walker.

Whether it’s offering a helping hand, a friendly word of encouragement, or simply being present for students, Walker has touched many hearts. The celebration of his influence as an SRO was a testament to the countless hours, heart, and dedication he puts into our school every day. Congratulations to Officer Walker! Our students, staff, and community will continue to appreciate him and his impact.
“Walker’s second to none,” Football Coach Tommy Smith said.
