Once a youthful and retro hippie pattern in the 60s, polka dots have been revived, coming back full circle in 2025 after being left in the past.
The unique, organized array of colored dots, originating in medieval Europe, has been displayed as prints on goods like clothing and accessories for decades; fading in and out of style throughout time, however, they have recently made a full comeback in trending fashion all over the world.
Polka dots have shed their carcass of being a playful, silly pattern and have evolved into the “it girl” print of 2025, worn fiercely and confidently by women and men all over the world.
The name for the circle pattern, “Polka Dot,” is derived from the Czech dance, called “the polka dance” in the 19th century. However, polka dots really blew up around the Industrial Revolution, when art was heavily encouraged and admired.
When the Polka Dance was brought to the United States, it gained immense traction and popularity, leading to the formation of Polka Clubs. Women all over the nation wore various garments with this newly popularized polka dot print to show their association with the club. From this point, everything goes uphill for the popularity and monetization of polka dots.

Fluctuating in and out throughout the decades, becoming popular again in the 60s, 70s and even the early 2000s, it has recently appeared in fashion again, fall of 2025.
“I’m so glad polka dots are back in style, now there are way more options for clothes with polka dots than before! They’re so freaking cute and whimsical,” said Ava Brown, a freshman at Athens Drive High.
The polka dot trend is even more prominent in the large public school, Athens Drive High. Although some are just following whatever’s trending, some loved the whimsy of the print before it blew up all over TikTok, and found it difficult to purchase pieces incorporating the print unless it was thrifted. You can spot people wearing polka dots in every classroom.
The retro pattern has been incorporated into pieces of big clothing brands and chains, such as Hollister, Target, Urban Outfitters, Pacsun, and others. Polka dots have also been worn and incorporated into the clothing of models, used for massive agencies like Vogue and Cosmopolitan.
Furthermore, Polka dots have also been worn by celebrities like Kendall Jenner, Selena Gomez, and Olivia Rodrigo. These iconic dots have also been seen at big celebrity events like the infamous Met Gala, where actress Priyanka Chopra wore a bold polka-dotted blazer suit, paired with a classy matching skirt, catching everyone’s eyes.
In short, everyone is obsessed with polka dots– even being strategically clashed with other patterns like pinstripes and florals. The popularization of polka dots is growing exponentially, and while they may be cute and classy right now, will they become an overused, eyesore in a couple of months, similarly to the bows of 2024?
