If there is one word to describe Heidi Bertz, it’s that she is empowering. Whether she’s doing school work or hanging out with friends, she always makes the people around her feel valued and seen, and encourages them by spreading her positivity and words of encouragement, leaving an impact on people.
“Heidi leads with heart. Her dedication isn’t just about completing tasks—it’s about building relationships, fostering growth, and always doing the right thing even when it’s the hard thing. Her integrity and compassion go hand in hand with her professionalism,” said Jennifer Hulsey, health science academy director at Athens.

As much as she’s a great student and person to be around, she also has faced struggles.
“Balancing school, sports(outside of school), and a part-time job was tough. I used to get overwhelmed, but I learned to prioritize and not be afraid to ask for help, especially from my teachers and friends. It taught me a lot about responsibility,” said Bertz.
Bertz had to adapt to her busy life outside of school, so she started using a calendar and setting reminders for her long days. The biggest thing she has done is surround herself with positive and motivated people.
“Definitely Friday night football games, spirit weeks, and just hanging out in the cafeteria with friends. Also, the senior activities Mr. Ramaley set up for us were special moments to share with the rest of the senior class,” said Bertz.
Bertz is planning to attend N.C. State to study Life Sciences. She likes animals and hopes to become a veterinarian one day.
“Get involved, don’t be afraid to try new things, and don’t waste time trying to impress people. Be yourself and focus on what makes you happy. Also, do your work early. Trust me,” said Bertz.

Hulsey is going to miss Bertz for her steady presence and always being there, and being reliable. She has described Heidi as a quiet, kind, but deeply impactful person. This time, instead of Bertz leaving little encouraging notes for others, Hulsey left a note of appreciation for Heidi and encouraged her to continue impacting lives the way she did here at Athens.
“Heidi, thank you for the compassion you’ve shared, the lives you’ve touched, and the difference you’ve made–more than you probably even know. Your legacy will echo in the way we support one another and continue the work you believed in so strongly. You will always be part of this place, and we’ll miss you more than words can say. Wishing you peace, joy, and all the good things in the next chapter,” said Hulsey.
