Summer screams movies. Josh McCormack, sophomore, can prove that with his “Top 10 Movies to watch over the Summer” list. McCormack, avid movie watcher and future movie critic, gave The Oracle ten movies that he recommends to watch over the summer.
10. Summer School
This 1987 comedy film is about a high school gym teacher, Freddy Shoop (Mark Harmon), who has plans for the summer but gets stuck having to teach an English summer-school class full of misfit students. Shoop agrees to teach the summer school class and grows a bond to the students who helped him make summer school fun.
“The title explains it all,” said McCormack, “It’s the best movie I’ve ever seen about summer break. The irony is that the characters are all having fun and yet still in school.”
9. Back to the Future
Back to the Future is a 1985 science-fiction comedy film about a young teenager, Marty McFly, who accidentally sets himself 30 years back in time by the invention of his friend, Dr. Emmet Brown, and his one job now is to make sure his high-school aged parents get together to save his own existence.
“It is one of the best sci-fi movies ever made. It is a great movie for those boring summer days,” said McCormack.
8. Goonies
Goonies is a 1985 adventure comedy film about a group of young boys who embark on a journey to find pirate treasure to save their homes from going through a foreclosure.
“It’s about kids going on an adventure. It is a bit cheesy, but that’s what makes it more enjoyable,” said McCormack, “One thing I like to do over the summer is to go to the woods with friends but this movie shows that sort of trip gone horribly wrong.”
7. The Big Lebowski
The Big Lebowski, according to McCormack is about a lazy guy who gets into ridiculously violent, yet funny, situations.
The Big Lebowski is about two men both named Jeffrey Lebowski, one being a lazy thug who goes by “The Dude” and another a handicapped veteran and multimillionaire. Their paths cross when Dude’s rug is soiled and needs to repair it so he seeks out to find Jeffrey Lebowski the multimillionaire.
“Possibly one of the strangest movie ever made. We all like to be lazy over the summer, and I feel like I identify with the main character named “Dude”,” said McCormack.
6. The Breakfast Club
The Breakfast Club is a 1985 comedy-drama movie about students that do display the different stereotypes who all get sent to detention and learn to bond with one another. “It’s a great movie about teen angst.” said McCormack, “It’s almost like a play at the end of the movie because everyone changes. It’s a great hang out movie.”
5. Friday the 13th
“This movie isn’t for everyone,” said McCormack, “but it does take place in a summer camp and is about kids who do what they are not supposed to.”
Friday the 13th is about a young group of teenagers who go off and camp by a lake and encounter a person named Jason Voorhees and his deadly ways.
“P.S. Jason is not the killer,” said McCormack.
4. The Warriors
The Warriors is a 1979 action-thriller movie about street gangs in New York City who bid to take it over. “People like to watch action movies over summer,” said McCormack, “It’s a great movie about a street gang who we shouldn’t really like but end up liking because we see their adventure.” McCormack describes the movie as “The feel of when your friends go to the beach, but much more intense and violent.”
3. Robocop (Original)
Robocop is a 1987 film about a terminally wounded cop who comes back as a robot to help out crime-ridden Detroit but is haunted by bad memories.
“I have not seen the remake because this is my favourite movie and don’t want to see the remake. It could be classified as a superhero movie, if so it’s the best one ever made, people love to watch superhero’s, and action. It’s also violent. People love that.” said McCormack.
2. Rocky III
Rocky III, directed by and starring Sylvester Stalone is a movie about the main character, Rocky, trying to fight his way up to his title of Heavyweight Champion after he gets defeated by a brutal challenger.
“It is an exciting movie. It’s like a rollercoaster ride and is probably the best threequel. Get the chance to see it.” said McCormack about the movie that he watches every summer as a family tradition.
1. Pulp Fiction
Pulp Fiction is a 1994 movie about the lives of two mob hit men, a boxer, a gangster’s wife and two diner bandits and their stories intertwined into one movie about redemption that tells a wonderful story.
“It has the best dialogue between people put to page. It makes it more fun. There are great music choices and a great throwback to the 70’s movies. It’s one of my favourite movies to watch on a daily basis and it gives a postcard like feel.” said McCormack.
McCormack was not the only one who had movie suggestions for the summer even though he mentioned how he was excited for the upcoming Godzilla movie. Breana McDougal, sophomore, says how she’s excited for “How to Train Your Dragon 2” because of the immature humour, the angst and appeal to the whole family. There are many other movies coming out this summer that everyone is looking forward to, but here is a complete list of movies that should make ones’ dull summer break exciting.
