Beautification day visits Athens for a face-lift

Athens Drive community gathers together to clean up the school grounds

With fall arriving, Athens Drive has decided to greatly improve the look of the school by beautifying its landscape. Everyone who wanted to help was invited to come out and lend a hand. The ADHS Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) Fall Beautification Day took place Saturday, October 26 from 9 a.m.- 1 p.m.
Volunteers were instructed that they should “be prepared to work.” Athens advertised the beautification day plan throughout the school. Flyers indicated that workers would plant 50 azaleas, remove liriopes (a type of plant) and replace them with mulch; they would also remove dead plants, shrubs and tree branches.
In addition, the pathway between the library and administration entrances were replaced with mulch and gravel is now spread around the base of the modulars.
“I think the beautification day made a huge difference this year, the front of the school looks a lot fresher and neater, it truly makes the school look better. I’m glad to say I got to help in fixing it up,” said Jamie Estroff, sophomore.
Volunteer organizations outside of Athens also showed up to assist in revamping the school. One example is Cary Teen Korps, which offered its members volunteer hours for the beautification day.
“I’m a member of Cary Teen Korps and this was a really cool experience because I got to gain service hours for my volunteer organization while helping out my school,” said Estroff.
Although the PTSA promoted this event, students were highly encouraged to join in on the opportunity by announcing that they would sign service hour logs for club members who took part in volunteering. On top of that, the Athens Drive Student Council members showed up at beautification day to help out their school. There were about 100 volunteers at the beautification day.
“I got to uproot plants and spread mulch to make the front entrance of Athens more appealing, not something I typically would have thought to be a fun Saturday morning, but a lot of my friends were there and the outcome was really great,” said Joey Liptak, junior.
