Graduation is right around the corner, and seniors are closing the door on an important chapter of their lives, approaching adulthood. Although these students have all worked hard throughout their high school careers, some exceed these expectations, becoming true role models for their fellow seniors and underclassmen of Athens.
Sophia Dexter is a senior graduating this June, and she is an important example of hard work and resilience. With many AP classes under her belt, she is no stranger to balancing her priorities and staying on top of her workload.
“I’m a procrastinator, so a lot of my obstacles are self-inflicted, but I’ve gotten better over time at setting aside time to get work done every day instead of saving it for the last minute,” Dexter said.
Combined with the National Honor Society, Dexter spends countless hours outside of school to keep up with clubs and her studies.
“I’ve been very lucky to have my parents and teachers help me develop good study habits and stay organized,” said Dexter.
Dexter is well-respected by her teachers, such as Renata Barsanti, the Athens Drive French teacher. Dexter has taken French since her sophomore year and is now in the French Honor Society (SHF), serving as the co-president. Learning a language has helped her to expand her character and gain confidence.
“Sophia is a good student not only because of her impeccable study and work habits, but also because she is a good classmate. She’s kind and supportive to others and makes the classroom a more positive place,” said Barsanti. “She has always had strong academic skills, but getting to see her gradually step into supporting classmates’ learning and into the role of SHF co-president has been wonderful!”
Following high school, Dexter plans to study at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, majoring in history.
“I’m most looking forward to the freedom of designing my schedule and the opportunity to dive deeper into what I’m really passionate about,” Dexter said.
This love for historical events has been reflected through Dexter’s work and shows through in every aspect of her life, truly showing her dedication.
“Her passion for history makes her stand out. To hear her apply this passion and use it to make connections in other subjects like French is to witness a scholar at work,” Barsanti said.
