Here at Athens Oracle, at the end of the school year, some students of the graduating class get recognized for the important work they do, for trying hard, and for going above and beyond. It is a huge honor to be nominated by the administration and staff team.
A staff member has nominated senior Alvin Thompson at Athens Drive for his hard work. His dedication and determination, along with his perseverance to keep moving forward, even while balancing extracurricular activities, home life, and his studies, prove that he is reliable and worthy of nomination.
“I would say that my family would probably describe me as reserved, quiet, diligent, and firm. But I would describe myself as easygoing, reserved, and adaptable,” said Thompson.
Having the support you need during school or in life is very important, as it allows you to rely on others and have the helping hand you need.
During his years at Athens Drive, he has been helping others and keeping up with his work, yet it feels like the past four years have gone by so fast.
“I feel like graduation came quicker than I expected, but I knew it was coming as it’s going to happen,” said Thompson.
Time is very valuable in the lives of seniors and all, and time brings different achievements. Whether those achievements are big or small, Thompson has a lot that he is proud of.
“My biggest accomplishment would be getting my Eagle Scout, as it was very difficult and it took multiple years,” said Thompson, ”I was also the first in my family to get it.”

Eagle Scout is a high-ranking badge that requires earning 21 merit badges and serving in multiple roles, from leadership to executing a large community project.
Alvin Thompson has been through a lot to accomplish his goals and his desires, so that he can plan for the future.
“I plan on graduating, getting an education, and going to NC State to possibly go into administration or finance and explore my options,” Thompson said.
After graduating from any school, it is always tough to leave behind cherished memories and people who you hold near and dear to your heart.
“My favorite memory of high school would probably be during football, after every game we celebrate, and I even hang out with friends during those weekends, chilling, and we go bowling and have fun,” stated Thompson.

Along with memories, they also learn new skills and different management skills that they use not just for school but in their lifetime, which can range from many things and be used in many environments and jobs.
“High school taught me how to manage and how to become independent, but rely on others, and how working as a community is stronger than an individual,” said Thompson. “Throughout high school, I want to be able to give and to receive help inside and outside of school. I wouldn’t have been able to make it without the help inside and outside.”
Management skills and offering assistance to others are very helpful, as they can provide people with different opinions and different ways of learning, as some people learn well from their peers, along with advising on the future.
“Some advice for upcoming freshmen is to explore your options, stay ahead of your books,” said Thompson, “and most of your problems can be solved if you work hard and have diligence, and give forth your best effort.”
