Europe’s biggest soccer competition is coming to an exciting close, and students at Athens Drive High School are excited about it. With the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League finals all set, there’s plenty of excitement, debate, and even a few predictions around the halls.
This year’s Champions League final is a battle between the Ligue 1 champions, Paris Saint-Germain, and the physical Italian side Inter Milan.PSG star Desire Doue leads the attack and is still searching for their first Champions League trophy. Many students believe this could finally be their year.
“PSG has too much Firepower,” said Sophomore Amir Ibrahim. “Players like Doue, Hakimi, Barcola are in top form, I think they’ll take it 3-1.”
Others at Athens Drive aren’t so sure. Junior Abody Moazeb, who follows Italian soccer closely, sees it differently. “Inters’ defense is a brick wall,” he said. “ Their entire backline has experience together, and they don’t panic under pressure. I’m calling a 2-1 for Inter with a late goal in the second half.”
Over in the Europa League, it’s a Premier League battle between Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur. While both teams have had their ups and downs this season, they’ve fought hard to reach the final.
Junior Henry Velasquez is a die-hard Manchester United fan and believes this is their chance to lift some silverware. “It hasn’t been our best season, but we’ve shown we can fight,” he said. “If Rashford shows up and Bruno Fernandes controls the midfield, we’ve got it. I’m thinking 2-0 United.”
But some students believe Spurs could pull off a win. “Tottenham’s been more consistent,” Abody said. “They’ve got a real shot, especially if they force it to penalties. I’d say it’s going to be close, maybe 1-1 and then Spurs win it in a shootout.”
The Conference League final may not be as well-known as the other two competitions, but this year’s matchup between Chelsea and Real Betis has still sparked interest. Chelsea, usually seen in the Champions League, found themselves in Europe’s third-tier tournament but have taken it seriously.
“It’s strange seeing Chelsea in the Conference League,” Amir said. “But they’ve looked solid. I think they’ll win easily, like 2-0 or 3-1.”
Still, there’s some respect for Real Betis and the underdog run they’ve had. “I’ve liked watching Betis,” said Henry. “They play with heart, but Chelsea’s just got more talent. It’s going to be tough for Betis to pull a win off.”
As the finals get closer, students are already planning to stream the games, watch highlights, and argue about results the next day at school. Whether they’re long-time fans or just excited for the big games, soccer has made its mark at Athens Drive. “It’s fun that we all care,” Amir said. “Even if we’re rooting for different teams, it brings everyone together.”
