November 22, 2024, the Athens Drive Jaguars faced against the Cary Imps in a heated varsity basketball game at Cary High’s gym. It was a classic rivalry matchup, with both teams bringing energy and determination. Athens Drive fell short despite their best efforts, losing 68-58.
“We came into this game confident,” said Ajani Ackles, a player for the Jaguars. “We practiced every day and studied film. We’ve beaten Cary in previous years and thought we could do it again.”
The rivalry between Athens Drive and Cary High runs deep. For decades, these schools, located just a few miles apart, have been fierce competitors in both academics and athletics. Whether it’s football, basketball, or track, every game between the Jaguars and Imps feels like a battle for local pride. Alumni and students from both sides pack the stands, fueling the intense atmosphere.
Athens started strong, keeping up with Cary’s fast pace and executing their plays well. But Cary had the edge, especially with their shooting guard scoring an impressive 24 points. The Jaguars’ defense struggled to keep up with Cary’s sharp three-point shooting and quick ball movement.
“Our team gave it everything we had,” said Coach Christopher Davis. “Even though we didn’t get the win, I’m proud of how we stayed resilient.”
The Jaguars pushed in the third quarter, cutting Cary’s lead to just five points. Senior point guard Malik Johnson stood out during this stretch, scoring fifteen points and setting up key plays to keep Athens in the fight. But in the final minutes, Cary pulled away with solid free-throw shooting and clutch defensive plays.
This loss puts Athens Drive at 0-2 for the season. It’s not the start they hoped for, but the team is determined to bounce back. The game revealed areas they need to improve, like staying consistent on defense and handling pressure in close situations.
“We’ll learn from this and come back stronger,” said Ackles. “This is just the beginning. We’re ready to show what we’re capable of.”
The rivalry between Athens Drive and Cary High is far from over. With another matchup later this season, the Jaguars will be hungry for redemption. Until then, they’ll keep working hard to turn their effort into victories.
