For many people, celebrating Christmas traditions is a wonderful way to embrace the joy of the holiday season. These traditions, whether centuries-old practices or newly created family rituals, help create a festive feeling and strengthen bonds between family and friends. Each tradition adds a unique charm to the celebration, from decorating the Christmas tree to exchanging gifts and enjoying festive meals.
“Me and my family usually hang out the morning of Christmas Eve and bake things. Then at night, we’ll watch a movie in our Christmas pajamas,” said Valerie Guenther, a sophomore at Athens Drive.
One of the most popular Christmas traditions is decorating the Christmas tree. Families often gather to decorate the tree with ornaments, lights, tinsel, and sometimes even a star. According to History, this tradition dates back to the 16th century in Germany, when devout Christians brought decorated trees into their homes. Over time, this practice evolved, and by the 19th century, Christmas trees had become popular in other parts of the world.
“My family usually puts up our tree and we decorate it together. It’s a really fun time,” said Darwin Salmeron Ruiz, a sophomore at Athens Drive.
Another festive tradition is the exchange of gifts. This symbolizes generosity and love and is often one of the most appreciated moments of the holiday. People carefully select and wrap presents for their loved ones, creating a sense of excitement and surprise on Christmas morning. The joy of giving and receiving makes everyone feel appreciated and remembered. The act of unwrapping presents together can be a fun and bonding experience, filled with laughter, smiles and heartfelt moments.
“I love opening presents with my family because we get to spend time together and it’s just really exciting to get to know what I got,” said Salmeron Ruiz.
Caroling is another tradition that brings joy to many. Groups of friends and family members go door-to-door singing Christmas carols, spreading cheer throughout the community and bringing a sense of togetherness. They sing songs like “Silent Night,” “Jingle Bells,” and “Deck the Halls,” sharing the holiday spirit with everyone they meet.
“I just love how bright the season is. It feels like a break from all of the bad winter attitudes,” said Cailyn Beacham, a junior at Athens Drive.
The winter season brings a unique and magical feeling. Crisp, cold air, and a peaceful atmosphere. There is something special about bundling up in warm clothes, sipping hot cocoa and feeling the warmth of a fire by the fireplace. The holiday lights and decorations add a festive touch, making everything feel even more enchanting.
“My favorite Christmas movie is The Spirit of Christmas. I love it when this time of the year comes so that I can watch it,” said Beacham.
Many people say that watching Christmas movies during Christmas time is a cozy and enjoyable thing to do during the holiday season. It’s a great way to relax and get into the holiday spirit. Whether it is classics like “Home Alone” or “Elf” or newer releases, curling up with a warm blanket while watching a festive movie is the way to go. Sharing these moments with the people you love makes it even more special, as everyone can laugh, cry and enjoy themselves together.
“I’m so excited for Christmas because of everything involved with the holiday and it’s so fun and cheerful. I also really love the vibe of Christmas,” said Guenther.
The holiday season is usually a time of joy, reflection, and togetherness for everyone. Whether through festive decorations, sharing meals, or exchanging heartfelt messages, the spirit of the season brings warmth and happiness to all who celebrate.
“Christmas is my favorite holiday because I get to spend time with my family. It makes me feel really excited about everything and makes me look forward to the next time this holiday will come around,” said Salmeron Ruiz.
