Athens Drive welcomes new theater teacher

Ashlynn Hayes arrived at Athens Drive for the 2015-16 school year as the new theater teacher. Hayes comes from a long line of educators, so when her husband got a job in Apex, she left her Greensboro home, eager to find a job in education.

This year is Hayes’s first year teaching, so she does not have specific methods or a set teaching style. She previously worked for Norwegian Cruise Lines as a theater technician. Hayes loves being around kids and believes that there is no such thing as an ideal or perfect student. Hayes looks for those who are passionate and ready to learn, while encouraging individuality and supporting those who are committed to their work.

“I love Athens. It has such a great arts community. There’s so much raw talent. It’s very refreshing,” said Hayes.

Hayes plans to continue to build on many of the old activities, such as the Thespian Society, fall play and spring musical, in respect to the “rich programs already in place,” set by the previous theater teacher, Burgandy Trimmer.

“Maybe in a year or so I’ll tweak [the programs] just a bit to make them a little more ‘Hayes’. I’m very adaptable, and can work with what I have,” said Hayes.

Many of Hayes’ students have enjoyed her class thus far. She does many group games such as Zip Zap Zop, Look and Scream, etc. These games allow the students and herself  get to know each other better.

“I really enjoy the way she handles things. She’s really encouraging and gets along well with everyone. She also has a quirky sense of humor,” said Madie Few, junior.

Hayes is most looking forward to getting to know the Athens Drive Thespian Society, and all the projects planned for the year.

“I came just for the class, but now that I’m here, I might do a play. It’s really great and Ms. Hayes has so much positive energy,” said Bethany Bernstein, sophomore.

The fall play will be “The Canterbury Tales,” and auditions will be held the week of September 14. There will be four male and four female roles, and two understudies, one male and one female.  She is ready for the year and encourages all levels of performers to participate.

“When we first found out about Ms. T [leaving], I was shocked,” said Hollie Clark, senior. “It was unexpected, but Ms. Hayes brings different stuff, so it may be a good change.”
