Wattpad

Originating in 2006 as the brainchild of Allen Lau and Ivan Yuen, “Wattpad,” with over two million writers publishing nearly 100,000 stories a day, never fails to entertain users all around the world. The website was created as a community in which passionate writers and readers could read or write stories, poems, fan fiction and articles about anyone and anything.

Wattpad has often been described as ‘The Youtube of Writing,’ because of the simple and efficient way it enables writers to share their work with the rest of the world.

Setting up an account involves just a few short minutes. Almost immediately after that, one is allowed to publish their works, either in installments or their entirety, for absolutely no price. In other words, Wattpad is like a virtual library, and a paradise for those who enjoy reading and writing.

A recent study of the website shows that many of the users are teenagers. One user, Tashaima Person, freshman at Athens Drive High School, has enjoyed using the website over the past year.

“It’s a really good website. There are undiscovered people out there who are really good writers, so this is a good way for people to express their talent and be recognized for doing so,” said Person.

Apart from gaining fame on the internet, Wattpad also gives out awards in a yearly competition known as ‘The Watty Awards.’ This competition has been conducted since 2011. Comprising of three categories, the Company gives away awards to ‘Popular’ writers (writers who are famous and are recognized on the website), ‘On the rise’ writers (those who are still gaining fame and recognition for their stories), and ‘Undiscovered’ writers (those who are yet to be recognized), with hopes that everyone will have a chance at winning an award.

Some examples of Watty award winners include Jane Inkspill for ‘Letters’, Ariana Godoy for ‘Sweet Madness’ and V.J Dunraven for ‘The Promise’.

Apart from writing and publishing literary works, one can do several other things on Wattpad.

“You can rate, comment, read and even make cover designs for other people’s stories, which I think is really cool,” said Person.

Gaining over 35 million unique viewers and over 10 million app downloads, Wattpad has already gained over 70 million dollars from investors to date. With this much success, it is only a fair prediction that it will continue to capture the attention of readers and writers, allowing them to share their talent and do what they love.
