Ethan Fowles, senior, has been awarded Jag of the Month for the month of January. Every month, the Athens Oracle talks to a different department chair to determine which student stands out and shows what it means to be an Athens Drive jaguar. This month, Fowles was selected by Ginger Harrell and her colleagues in the math department.
“We think that he’s a really great human, and he’s very smart and hardworking,” said Harrell.
Fowles takes many advanced courses and excels in all of them. He’s also heavily involved in many activities at school. One of his favorite experiences has been his involvement in the Speech and Debate Club.
“Talking about any topics, teaching more public speaking, and the student speaking competition is fun,” said Fowles.
Fowles participated in the competition last year, where he presented a speech about cell phone use. He found creative ways to get his point across, even planning out a call he’d receive from his friend that would interrupt his presentation.
“Finding potential solutions for teachers about cell phone use…it was fun doing that kind of research,” said Fowles.
Fowles also serves as the president of the STEM Academy, is on the Science Olympiad team, is on the board of the Social Studies Honor Society, and has even been the weatherman for the school’s broadcasting channel, ATV News.
“He just stands out, he’s a bright spot in your day, he always greets you with a smile, and he’s always willing to help,” said Harrell.
Fowles plans to attend a four-year university, and major in Biology next year. Part of this decision has been his experiences with Sherry Wantz, his science teacher.
“I’ve taken Anatomy and Physiology, and that’s a really fun class… and I really love Mrs.Wantz, I’m sad that she’s leaving this year but she deserves it 200 times over,” said Fowles.
Fowles isn’t sure whether he’ll use his Biology degree for research, or apply to medical school, but he knows that either way it’s the subject he’s excited to pursue.
Aside from his success in school, teachers and students describe Fowles as a kind, genuine and thoughtful person. His ability to show remarkable character while also standing out in school is what has allowed him to earn this month’s Jag of the Month.
“He’s one of the sincerest and kindest kids,” said Harrell.
