Each month, the Athens Oracle asks one of the department chairs to choose a student to be recognized as Jag of the Month. Senior Tryus Horton has been honored as Jag of the Month for December; science department chair Sherry Wantz nominated Horton.
Horton is in Wantz’s Honors Anatomy and Physiology class and has notably been a good student who is always up to participate and help others.
“He just always does what he is supposed to do; he’s a good guy, has a good personality, helps everyone out with whatever, and just does things the right way,” said Sherry Wantz.
Motivated by helping others, Horton’s goal after high school is to attend college at UNC Charlotte for political science.
“I like that UNC Charlotte is away from home and in a city environment where I can see myself thriving. After college, I want to start as a police officer and hopefully run for some political office,” said Tyrus Horton.
Horton is involved in multiple extracurricular activities, including playing for the Athens Drive varsity tennis team, taking part in a part-time job as a tennis instructor for kids, and being a representative for the senior class student council; and has been involved in STUCO since freshman year.
“I started playing tennis seriously during Covid because I had nothing else to do, so I sprouted up and then wanted to become better at tennis. I would say I’m pretty passionate about tennis,” said Horton.
Having a good work ethic is important for success. Horton manages to get good grades and maintains his 3.9 GPA while being an involved student.
“Tyrus is the type of student teachers love to have in class because he just does things the right way and is a joy to have in class,” said Wantz.
