As the air gets cooler and the leaves get warmer, people in the North Carolina Triangle area are drawn to the outdoors for some fun. North Carolina has a lot to offer for all ages, but sometimes people just need to do a little digging to find the right activities for them. Here are some hidden gems to explore this fall season.

A classic fall event in the area is the NC State Fair, took place from October 17 – 27. The annual event attracts North Carolinians from all over the state to take part in the eleven days of rides, fun foods, live music, stunt shows, farm animals and much more entertainment. The State Fair has nightly fireworks, to wrap up the day, as a beautiful event for all ages.
The Carolina Ballet has two shows this fall: Jekyll & Hyde at the Fletcher Opera Theater (October 17 – November 3) and Carmina Burana at the Raleigh Memorial Auditorium (November 21 – 24). There’s no better way to get into the spooky season spirit than an evening of chills and thrills watching a haunting Ballet.
The HollyFest is a family-friendly event held at Jefferson L. Sugg Farm at Bass Lake which took place on October 26. This event celebrates the town of Holly Springs, featuring local artists, businesses, food vendors, children’s activities and local entertainment. Admission is free and it is a great way to enjoy the fall weather and explore what the Holly Springs community has to offer.
The Day of the Dead 5k was also on October 26. It’s hosted by Centro Mexican Restaurant and raises money for the Boys & Girls Club. Attendees can participate in running, walking, bike rides, face painting, live music, and the famous dance-off costume contest. The race started at 9 AM, with the race course passing through Oakwood cemetery and looping back to Wilmington St. There were two altars where people were able to give offerings of flowers and written messages in memory of their loved ones.

The NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes return to the Lenovo Center (formerly PNC Arena) this October for another exciting season. These hockey games are exciting with lots of fan spirit and engagement in the crowd. They kicked off the new season with a home game against Tampa Bay and will play 10 more home games throughout October and November.
Moonlight in the Garden takes place on November 2, 8, 9, and 14-16 at the JC Raulston Arboretum at North Carolina State University. This event holds a special opportunity to see the nationally acclaimed gardens artfully illuminated by colorful lights. Invite your family and friends to explore the magically light garden, enjoy live music and food trucks, all while supporting the JC Raulston Arboretum.
If you’re into sports and want some live entertainment this fall season, check out the ACC Women’s and Men’s Soccer Championships. Two champions will be crowned at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary in November. Women’s semifinals are on Nov. 7 and the final on Nov. 10. Men’s semifinals are on Nov. 14 and the final, on Nov. 17. These games are a great way to get into team spirit and have something to look forward to throughout the month.

The North Carolina Chinese Lantern Festival is a beautiful tradition featuring glowing hand-crafted lantern displays. This event is held at the Koka Booth Amphitheatre in Cary, North Carolina from Nov. 16 through Jan. 12. In addition to the lanterns, visitors can enjoy live cultural performances, such as Chinese acrobatics, traditional music, and dance, giving an immersive experience of Chinese heritage. This event is the perfect way to enjoy peaceful fall evenings outdoors.
Last but certainly not least, the pumpkin patches, corn mazes and haunted houses are always a hit in the triangle area. A popular one is Phillips Farm, located in Cary, which includes a pumpkin patch, corn maze, wagon rides and a haunted farm. If you need a little scare to get you into the Halloween spirit, Phillips Farm is the perfect place to start with their haunted trails and houses filled with people dressed up in frightening costumes.
