AI in schools is a subject that is argued amongst staff, students, and administration due to its potentially bad uses, such as committing copyright by using AI essays. On the other hand, there are a lot of cases where AI can be useful and benefit students’ study skills by generating review guides, giving AI-generated practice tests, and more. Here are examples of AI systems that can benefit student learning. 

Quizlet AI

Quizlet is a commonly used online software by students of all different grade levels. For free, students can use Quizlet to create virtual flashcard sets and take a small number of practice tests created by AI. Quizlet can be a great asset for any student, but students with the paid version receive many other positive benefits. 

Students can purchase Quizlet Plus for about 38 dollars per year, giving access to many other resources, such as “Magic Notes” where you upload a copy of your notes and AI generates flashcards and study guides to aid student’s studies.

Quizlet Plus also includes a feature called Q chat, which is a Quizlet AI tutor that can ask you questions to help you learn the content you are studying and explain concepts that students have a hard time grasping. Overall, Quizlet or Quizlet Plus are great resources for students, and every year, they help support the academics of people in most grades or subjects.

Turbo Learn 

Turbo Learn is a relatively new AI software college students commonly use to record lectures and translate them into study guides and flashcards. The goal is to save time and allow students to study simplified content. Unfortunately, this software is not free but is $8.99 per month.  The cost of this software is higher than most AI study sites, however, for students who are constantly attending voice lectures, this can be a useful asset.

Overall, Turbo Learn is a more expensive AI service that helps students study. Still, those who consistently attend lecture-based courses find this service extremely beneficial, saving them hours and allowing them to jump right into their studies. 

Google notebook LM

Google Notebook LM is a completely free service that is owned by Google, which has a unique AI feature that can turn your notes into a podcast meant to help students learn content through listening to discussion and even learn on the go such as places like the gym or the car. 

According to Trafere.com “In addition to improving comprehension and reinforcing language skills, high-quality audio can also enhance memory retention among young learners. When students are able to hear and understand lessons clearly, they are more likely to remember the information later on,”.

On top of introducing a new way of learning to students, it’s free, which benefits many students, especially those who do not want to pay for AI services. Overall Google Notebook LM is a great service for any student as it is free and introduces a new way of studying that may help improve the scores of many students. 

Grammarly 

As the name suggests, Grammarly is an AI extension you add to your Google Chrome that automatically checks your grammar when writing. Grammarly’s free plan gives you unlimited basic grammar suggestions such as missing commas, wordy language, and misspelled words. Many students use the basic plan for Grammarly and find that this is all the assistance they need to ensure good grammar when writing a strong essay.

“I feel like it just like… how Google Docs has a grammar checker and I think that Grammarly is a little better and I prefer Grammarly as it has a grade scorer and shows you where you need to improve based on length and readability,” said Chegari.

Overall most users of Grammarly are satisfied with their experience with regular Grammarly but it varies amongst student’s fields of study; some students may benefit from Grammarly Premium more than others

Google Gemini 

Google Gemini is an AI run completely by Google and can be used by students for numerous purposes. This AI can help assist students with revising writing and creating study guides. The best part about Google Gemini is it is a completely free service for workspace and educational purposes

Overall, AI is a new part of education that has pros and cons. If AI is misused it can create academic problems or even result in rule infractions. On the flip side, if AI is utilized as a resource to encourage learning and help students study, it could be a great resource in preparing students for their future.
