Elizabeth Logsdon is a well-known math teacher who has recently been given a chance to become an administrative intern in hopes that she can become an administrator in the future. Let’s take a walk through her day.

Upon arriving at Athens Drive in the morning Logsdon prepares to teach her first-period AP Calculus class.

“I teach AP Calculus 1st period. Before school, normally, I’m prepping for 1st period, like, prepping for class and then I teach my 1st period,” said Logsdon.

Being an administrative intern does not stop Logsdon from performing her normal teaching duties throughout the day. She continues to teach and grade papers when she is not working toward her 700-hour internship requirement.

“I still clearly am doing teacher stuff right now. I still have to do some planning for my class. I grade some papers, and I also grade quizzes, and I still plan for 1st period. Some meetings, like IEP meetings, sometimes I still have to go to,” said Logsdon.

Logsdon works hand in hand with the other administrators often shadowing them and attending weekly meetings.

“As an administrative intern, Ms. Logsdon attends our admin meetings that we have at least once a week, she has sat in with different administrators when they’ve been doing any discipline, and different things like that,” said Patricia Abel, Assistant Principal at Athens Drive.

Logsdon is currently completing her administrative internship at Appalachian State University and can continue her duties at Athens Drive without any complications or scheduling conflicts.

“I am getting my master’s in school administration at Appalachian State University. So I’ve been doing that for the last 2 years. It’s an online program. I’ve been taking classes online. I don’t have to go to Boone, which is nice. So it works with my schedule here,” said Logsdon.

Logsdon enrolled in her internship program with a recommendation from one of our very own administrators Patricia Abel, who has full faith in Logsdon when it comes to her completing the internship and becoming a full time administrator.

“I have known Ms. Logsdon since she came here. I’ve worked with her all the years she’s been here. Ms. Logsdon has been the co-department chair of the math department. She’s taken on a number of leadership roles in the school and is always willing to help out and do different things,” said Abel.

Logsdon is already doing the duties of an administrator so she is able to go into her first full year as an administrator with the knowledge and experience she needs to do the job.

“She’ll sit in on conferences like parent conferences… any of the different things, you know, to just give her the full day-to-day operations of an administrator. I have always felt that she has very strong qualities that are needed to be an administrator,” said Abel.
