The Buffalo Bills and Kansas City Chiefs played an amazing game on November 17 at Highmark Stadium. The Bills won 30-21 using skills and tactics, delivering the Chiefs their first loss since Christmas of 2023 against the Las Vegas Raiders.
The Chiefs no longer being undefeated is a huge achievement for the Bills but also a game-changer for other competing teams. Coaches of different teams that saw the game can now use similar skills in future games, which may give them a serious leg-up when facing the Chief’s defensive line. Because of the 11-1 record the Chiefs hold, many teams do not have a way of learning from their losses and trying the same strategies on the Chiefs that they would with other teams. The only issue is that Kansas City is one of the eight teams ever to win back-to-back Super Bowls.
“The loss of the Chiefs gives hope and dedication to other teams competing, allowing them to have a chance at winning themselves,” said Yullian Aries, junior.
The main aspect that helped the Bills take the win was the touchdowns they made at the end of the game. They weren’t winning most of the game, but a 26-yard touchdown scramble that Josh Allen, quarterback for the Bills, ran ended up putting them in a 9-point lead, which ultimately sealed the win for Buffalo. This also wasn’t a high-scoring game, unlike most Chiefs games, which proves that the Bills had a great defense and made the Chief’s weak spot crystal clear.
“I think the aspect that helped the Bills win was the touchdowns they made on their last possessions. It ended up giving them almost 11 more minutes of possession time,” said Aries.
Aside from the Bills defense, Josh Allen was able to find weak points and openings when making his passes. There was a large difference in the number of completions the Bills had against the Chiefs compared to most of the other teams that faced them early on. He made 27 out of the 40 passes he threw, which is an excellent record, especially when facing a strong offense like the Chiefs. Even in the times when he didn’t put up many yards with his passes, he still got the ball in the hands of his wide receivers, which is way better than throwing an interception and losing possession.
“A good defense was one of the aspects that made them able to predict when they should run or throw the ball. Also being able to stop Mahomes from running the ball,” said Lukas Rabon, a junior at Athens
The Bills’ ability to beat the Chiefs was a great indicator for some of the strategies, tactics and methods that are necessary, but also gave other teams ideas that they can use to win future games against them.
“It showed the Chiefs can bleed, Josh Allen was able to find openings showing a weakness in the Chief’s defense mainly their cornerbacks, but also shows they have good defensive linemen as they stopped most run attempts,” said Rabon.
