“Meditation music helps me sleep. I’ll listen to it every single night and I take deep breaths,” said Melani Carlton, career coordinator.
Johns Hopkins Medicine has prove that the type of music that you listen to can have a big impact on your well-being. It shows that music can make you happier, can reduce anxiety, and helps promote relaxation.
According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, “Research has shown that listening to music can reduce anxiety, blood pressure, and pain as well as improve sleep quality, mood, mental alertness, and memory.”
“I like listening to R&B, and my favorite song is Inner Mode by Bryson Tiller. I like to listen to music because it makes me feel better when I’m sad or down,” said Anayiah Lovett-Lane, junior.
Music has healing properties. Artists such as Jhene Aiko use techniques that bring a sense of peace and tranquility. Many people love Jhene Aiko’s music due to her vulnerability and ability to talk about personal topics that they can relate to, which attracts people to listen to her more.
“I love Jhene Aiko’s music. It’s something about her voice and the way that her music sounds that makes you want to listen to her more,” said Lovett-Lane.
Other artists such as Saint Harison, create music that connects to his listeners. His songs usually talk about different experiences that people may have and can resonate with. Through those universal experiences, his music helps people better connect on a deeper level.
“Music is very calming and helps me think. My favorite song is Ego Talkin‘ by Saint Harison because I just really like the flow, beat, and sound of the artist’s voice,” said Davion Grimes, junior.
Some adults prefer to listen to classical, jazz, or gospel music over listening to rap, which tends to gravitate more toward younger people. Classical music has a lot of emotion, whether it makes you feel joyful or sad.
“Right now, I like listening to classical or jazz music. It helps me calm down,” said Carlton.
Younger people prefer to listen to rap because it can be very engaging to its listeners due to its energizing lyrics. Rap is often fast-paced, which a lot of people enjoy. Artists such as 21 Savage tell stories about their past struggles through their music. People like to listen to him because he’s very open and honest about what he’s been through.
“I like listening to 21 because he’s a good lyricist. In general, I like listening to music because it allows me to be in my own world and helps calm me down,” said Lemuel Hailey, junior.
