The effects of Hurricane Helene devastated the people of Western North Carolina, and many homes sustained damage that will take many years to recover from. Many communities in North Carolina are working hard to support these communities, which are in major need of assistance.
Not all the citizens affected by Hurricane Helene had much notice to help them prepare for the disaster. While central and eastern North Carolina knows the impacts of hurricanes, the western part of the state is not often struck by hurricanes, making them harder to withstand, leaving little to do when one is to occur.
AP Environmental Science teacher Tyler Latta shares his family’s experience with the hurricane. He is one of many staff members and students who know someone who has been affected by the storm.
“Downtown Boone was pretty devastated and some found a place to go like App State,” said Tyler Latta, AP Environmental Science teacher at Athens Drive.
People who went through the hurricane suffered from the flood, and some did not have houses to live in since it got destroyed very badly, and some are still without houses to live in. Since then, some have heard about the news about their relatives not finding a place to stay.
Mr Latta gave donations to help his family from Hurricane Helene and helping others with the food and water for others.
“I did not specifically help my cousin, but me and Mrs Latta have had some donations by the NHS,” said Latta.
Some gave donations to help the hurricane like food and water and supplies for people living on the streets and for hurricane effort and other hurricane reliefs some needed food and a home to live in. Some are homeless, and others are not.
Latta expressed concern about the people in Boone who have recovered from the hurricane but Asheville has severe damage due to the hurricane.
“From what I have understood, Boone has recovered from hurricane Helene but Asheville is not so lucky in some of the superb areas and for those who were underwater were so lucky,” said Latta.
Asheville was not lucky due to the cause of the hurricane and flooding. Since then some needed shelter, food, and water, and others needed something to do like a business or a job. Some have to restart their lives and jobs all over again due to the flood. Some can visit family members who lost their house and want shelter and a place to stay. When it comes to getting a place to are expensive due to the money increasing after the hurricane hit houses and apartments
Hurricane Helene caused substantial damage to the community of western Carolina that will be remembered for many years. Many people, however, are working their hardest to support those communities and help them recover from all the destruction that has occurred.
