School is back, and so are sports. The Athens boys varsity soccer team is off to a strong start winning 9-0 against Knightdale, with many more games coming up. With ten wins and four losses at the time of writing, the team’s season is looking up.
Brower Evanhouse, a junior at Athens on the varsity team, has played for the team for three years since he was a freshman. He takes pride in his team and enjoys working with his friends to play the best games they can.
“We’re really good at possessing the ball, passing it and keeping it moving,” said Evanhouse.
The varsity team has a lot of confidence this year about their performance at games. Especially with the new coach and players who know each other well and how to work together, this season is off to a great start.
“I like it a lot,” said Junior Trent Smith, “I like the coaching, the program we have going on, we got a new coach this year, and he can really see the development that we’ve taken on this year.”
Smith has been playing soccer for all three years he’s been at Athens. He’s on the team with people he’s known and been playing with for years at this point and believes that the strong connection between players is a big contributing factor to their performance.
Athens played Sanderson at Jaguar stadium Sept. 9 and won 1-3, solidifying their good teamwork and start of the season.
“I think this year the team is the closest it’s ever been, and our record shows it,” said Smith, “this is the best team we’ve had since I’ve been here.”
