New teachers arrive at Athens

Two new teachers, Kimberly Clay and Sandra Childrey, have come to teach science and mathematics, respectively, at Athens Drive.  Both teachers taught eighth grade students at Dillard Drive Middle School last year.

“I have been teaching more years than you’ve been alive,” said Clay.

Clay has previous experience teaching Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science and eighth grade science.  She has taught at West Millbrook, Rolesville Middle, Community Partners Charter High and Dillard Drive Middle School.  This year at Athens Clay will be teaching Honors and Academic Earth Science.

“I am looking forward to working with a great faculty and helping students develop their skills with science,” said Clay.

Childrey, who has been teaching for 24 years, spent her last 11 years at Dillard Drive.  Childrey taught eighth grade math, algebra I, and geometry at Dillard Drive.  In addition she has experience teaching sixth through eighth grade science, yearbook, and resource math.

Childrey graduated from NC State University with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics Education.  She then continued to study at Pfieffer University to earn Learning Disabilities and Mental Handicaps Certification. Childrey continued her education by earning her Masters in Middle Grades Education and received her National Board Certification in Early Adolescent Mathematics.

Childrey enjoys basketball and is a big fan of NC State.  In her spare time she is a back up scorekeeper for basketball games at NC State.

When asked how she felt about teaching at Athens, Childrey said, “I love teaching at ADHS.  I miss many of my colleagues at DDMS but have felt very welcome here. I’ve wanted to return to teaching high school for a long time.”
