Why we need to stop politicizing events

Politics play a large role in our society, but recently politics have overflowed into events where they have no place. While recent events like the Las Vegas shooting forces us to face our issues as a nation, we need to learn to see this tragedy and others as unacceptable events, not a method to further a political agenda.

Senator Rand Paul was recently attacked while mowing the lawn at his house by a neighbor whose motive is not known. As a result of the attack, Paul sustained lacerations to his face as well as six broken ribs; injuries which made breathing and talking painful for weeks. Despite the unnecessary violence, there were many responses to the attack suggesting that Paul deserved it because of his political views.

“He has universal healthcare, he’ll be fine,” read one response on Twitter.

Moving past the fact that the person apparently doesn’t understand what universal healthcare is, suggesting that Paul deserves to be violently attacked because of his political views is sick. Nobody, regardless of political views deserves to be attacked.

Another issue that politics have no place in are the slew of recent sexual harassment allegations. Both Republicans and Democrats have a double standard for members of their own party– Democrats have defended Representative John Conyers, who has now retired, while calling for Senator Roy Moore to resign. Republicans, on the other hand, defended Moore while calling for Conyers to resign.

Republicans, however, took it one step further by formally endorsing Roy Moore’s campaign, saying that they have no choice but to.

“You know [Trump] needs every Republican he can get so he can put his agenda through. So that’s the only Republican you can possibly get [In Alabama],” said Utah Senator Orrin Hatch.
Everyone needs to look past the politics and see these awful acts as they are. Having the same political views as someone does not excuse wrongdoing.

“Roy Moore in the US Senate would be a stain on the [Republican party] and on the nation. Leigh Corfman [, one of one Moore’s accusers,] and other victims are courageous heroes. No vote, no majority is worth losing our honor, our integrity,” said former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney.

We should all take a lesson from the words of Mitt Romney– no political motive or potential political gain should excuse a person from wrongdoing. The double standard must end.
