Men’s basketball starts season with a bang

Men’s Varsity Basketball team lines up for the National Anthem vs Middle Creek

The Men’s Varsity Basketball Team has started their season at Athens Drive Magnet High School. The first game of the season was November 21, 2017. Although the team played in tournaments and scrimmages before then, this game started off the running record.

The student council at Athens Drive planned for the first game to be “glow out” themed. Most of the people in the stands and the student section brought glow sticks to participate. Once Middle Creek High School’s starting lineup was announced, the lights were turned off in the entire gym and the spotlight was on the Jaguars.

“The energy was amazing, it was a good feel for my last first basketball game in high school,” said center Treyvon Judd, senior.

With the team starting workouts and practices before the actually season, it allowed relationships to form and a bond between the players while on the court.

“I think individually each player has improved. The challenge will be working harder as a team to improve,” said Robbie St. John, head coach.

There has been an addition to the coaching staff on the basketball team. Coach Neff started his first season with jaguars. Adding a new coach could bring in different aspects and techniques for the players.

“We have additions to our staff. Coach Neff is our varsity assistant. This is his 7th year coaching. He also coached with me for a few years in Virginia,” said St. John.

Coach Neff already knows the system, now they are trusting him to know how to deal with the players so they can listen and perform on the court.

After a strong start to the season, the Jaguars are pushing themselves to make it to the playoffs, and maybe even the State Championship.

“I want us to try and make it as far as we can in the playoffs and hopefully win a ring,” said Judd.

Athens won the home-opener game with a score of 79-70. The top scorer of the game was DJ Robertson with 30 points.
