Athens Drive Magnet High School (ADMHS) became a magnet school starting the 2016-2017 school year, causing the school to have a Magnet Theme Showcase each year for rising ninth grade students and their families to show what Athens Drive has to offer. Over 400 people came to the event and around 50 people went on tours around the school.
“It’s our best chance to let people chat with us and see if it’s a good fit for them,” said Tonya Hinton, Magnet Coordinator.
There were two Q and A sessions held for parents of rising ninth grade students along with rooms where you can speak with athletic directors, students at the school and teachers. At the magnet fair, the Health Science Academy (HSA) had a room where those interested in Athens Drive could go in and learn more about how it helps students that take part in the program, with future jobs in anatomy.
“The magnet fair helps parents and student get used to Athens before they come here and they know what our school has to offer,” said Elias Guedira, freshman.
Families walked around the cafeteria and learned about how classes become magnet related at Athens Drive and use the magnet theme. The teachers talked about how the magnet theme is put into effect during and outside of class. Work done by students was put out on display to show parents what students create. Parents also saw examples of lessons that are taught to the students.
“The parents are probably going to want to know what type of school their children are going to want to go to,” said Guedira. “They should be able to know that Athens has a lot to offer.”
