Tragedy struck America on the night of October 1, 2018. A gunman, Stephen Paddock opened fire on a large crowd of concertgoers before killing himself. The attack took place on the Las Vegas Strip in Nevada. The aftermath left 58 people dead and 489 injured.

Paddock reserved a hotel room on the 32 floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino.  Witnesses say that Paddock fired multiple rounds at the crowd. The attack lasted for 11 minutes as the gunman stopped to reload and continue.

Authorities said the Las Vegas gunman shot a hotel security guard six minutes before he began shooting concertgoers from his hotel room. The gun had a silencer on it so no one knew that the guard was shot and the massacre would occur.

Clark County Sheriff  Joseph Lombardo said investigators do not know why Paddock fired at the crowd or why he decided to stop. There is no way to figure out the motive of the shooting even after the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) questioned Paddock’s girlfriend, Marilou Danley.

Many people started posting pictures and tweet saying “Pray for Vegas”.

“I was worried from the jump, I saw numerous people posting about Vegas and I did not even know what happened but knowing I had family there worried me,” said Jordan Powell, junior.

Although there were many tragedies that night, it brought the community of Las Vegas closer. For the next week people began lining up to donate blood to help victims that were in the hospital. Most of the blood that was donated was not used, although there were 500 people in need. The blocks in Las Vegas were filled with lines of good samaritans trying to give blood, but for some it was a waste of time because there were not enough doctors or storage space to store that much blood.

“Even though Las Vegas was very unfortunate during the attack, they have hundreds of people living in the city that acted as a family afterwards. It is awesome to see so many people wanting to help others that they do not know,” said Powell.
