The Athens Drive High School Varsity volleyball team competed against Middle Creek Sept. 7, with a close loss of  3-2 . Essentially, teams score points whenever the other team messes up, and a point is awarded on every serve. They are  played as the best 3 out of a 5 games to 24.

“Our season has been pretty good, we have some really good talent that we’re trying to improve on to showcase our full skill,” said Smith.  “Even though we had some up and down’s but that’s typical of every season, we stay optimistic especially for conference play, I think we have a really good shot at a lot of success.”

“That they have so much talent on their team it is a really high chance that they will make state playoffs this year,” said Smith.

Smith’s coaching philosophy includes her being a positive role model to her players while also teaching them how to be a “better young women.”

“All about the expectations and the discipline, because those are character traits that are going to carry with you for the rest of your life,” said Smith.

This is Smith’s fifth year coaching but she’s only been to the first round once, but she said that this year could be totally different. “I hope that we can continue to be strategic enough to make a good run in the playoffs and chip away into the playoffs this year.” said Smith

Smith also said that they look forward to their leader Claire Campbell, who  has already committed to the College of Charleston. “She’s often the one we look to because she has a really high level of skill and also game IQ-  She’s the one the we make all our plays around right now.” said Smith. “But it’s always a  team effort because everybody on the floor give 110 percent. No one player can play all by thereself it’s always a team efforts when trying to win games, make plays ,and also when giving it  all on the court.”  Said Smith
