Four Athens Drive seniors sign their national letter of intent

Seniors Drew Martin, David Parker, Peyton Smith and Tyler Silver were all joined by their friends, family and coaches as they signed their letter of intent to play Division I and Division II college sports Nov. 10.

On signing day, senior athletes who have verbally committed to play college sports make their decision official by signing a letter of intent. Martin, Parker and Smith all signed to play lacrosse. Parker and Martin committed to Wingate University while Smith committed to Marist College. Silver signed to swim at the University of Florida.

Silver, one of the Athens Drive swim team captains, won the 2015 North Carolina High School 4A state champion in the 100 backstroke and qualified for the USA Winter Nationals. Silver was also considering Arizona State University, North Carolina State University, University of North Carolina and University of South Carolina. Because of his enjoyable recruiting trip and academic major, Silver decided on Florida.

“Florida’s men’s team has won the Southeastern Conference (SEC) meet the past three years, so I thought being apart of a championship team would be exciting,” said Silver. “I’m also looking forward to getting the experience of swimming for the 2012 head Olympic coach.”

Smith has been on the Athens varsity lacrosse team all four years in high school and has been named to the First Team All-Conference for the Southwest Wake Athletic Conference (SWAC). In addition, Smith was crowned the No. 1 faceoff specialist in the nation for the class of 2016. Smith looked at Navy, Furman, Mercer, High Point and Rutgers but eventually chose Marist because of the Division I program’s strong history, the coaching staff and academics.

“I’m excited to play at a higher level and play with guys who are like me and do whatever it takes to win and accomplish our goals,” said Smith.

Martin is a four-year varsity lacrosse player and helped Athens make it to the quarterfinals of the state playoffs last spring.

“Playing lacrosse in college was kind of a last minute decision, but I decided it would be a good idea to play a sport in college rather than just sitting around. Wingate is a good fit because it is close to home and I know people on the team,” said Martin.

Parker is a three year varsity lacrosse player, who was part of the Athens varsity lacrosse team who advance to the quarterfinal game of playoffs last spring and played in the FLG in 3D all star game. He picked Wingate because of his positive impression of the  campus, the size of the school, the inviting coaches and the nice players.

“What I’m looking forward to most is the new level of competition, being away from home and the fact that the school is awesome,” said Parker.

There will also be a second signing day in February 2016 for seniors Colby Agu, Daria Draovitch, Jack Rogers, Raquel Rooney, Elisabeth Smith, Erika Snyder and Rachel Snyder. Rooney and Smith will be signing for women’s volleyball, Rogers for men’s lacrosse, Agu for men’s soccer, and Draovitch, Erika Snyder and Rachel Snyder for women’s soccer.
