In early April, three teachers assigned their classes to work together on a collaborative book project to help incoming freshmen with different problems and situations that they are going to go through in high school. The three classes that participated in this project were newspaper with Patricia Hornick, art with Farrell Hilton, and graphic design with Elizabeth Luna.
“I was inspired by by Luna’s book design last year, and I thought it would be a good project for the students to inspire the freshmen and actually help them out with some of the problems that they might face,” said Hilton.
The collaborative book project was created by those three teachers. The students had to come up with a creative and descriptive topic about problems that students deal with during their four years in high school. To do this, the students have to have someone from each class in their group to make the book come together. The newspaper students helped with the story to make it creative, the art students had to come up with art style of the book, and the graphic design students helped scan the pictures and writing to digitally put the book together.
For example, one group came up with a story about trends and how people break away from them and become themselves. Another group came up with a story about how to not give into peer pressure.
To create the project students had almost two weeks to come up with their ideas and ways to make their book come together. To print the book in hard copy it cost $13 and $9 for a soft copy. The students could choose to print their book in hard or soft copy depending on what they thought of the book. Students even had the opportunity to sell the book online.
“I think my favorite part of the book was working with different classes so I could get to work with different people and the different skills that they have,” said Chris Bullock, junior.
The project was due April 29 and it had to be printed by the next week from its due date. The books will be shown to freshman in the 2015-2016 school year.
“I would not change anything about our book because I think with the amount of time that we had we made it the best we could,” said Bullock.
