Kevin, the long lasting cat is finally home.
Kevin was adopted by Cheryl Halls in June 2013. He was an indoor cat but did not really like being one; he would often show that he wanted to be outside by looking out the window and whining when Halls left the house, picking and scratching at the furniture. Finally one day Halls let him out and that is where the journey began for Kevin, the long-lasting cat.
“I don’t think she should have let her cat out, knowing that he was an in-house cat,” said Mashayla Wright, freshman.
When Halls came home and saw that her cat was missing, she looked for Kevin for about six months before she just had to call it quits. Even after she stopped looking for him from time to time she would look in animal pounds to see if he had shown up.
Kevin was finally reconnected with his family in South Carolina after traveling a year and a half since they last saw him. He made it all the way to California, where an inspector heard him meowing in the back of a U-Haul truck.
“I feel like this cat was on a mission to find something or get something that he might have seen or done in his past, because usually cats will return to their owner after a few hours of being away from them,” said Jalen Leach, freshman.
June 18,2014 two nonprofits booked him home a ticket so he could be with his family.
“I feel Kevin the cat is really smart going by himself and not really having a real meal to eat off of, and still managing to stay alive,” said Leach.
The U-Haul driver had no idea that Kevin was in the back of her truck; she never heard a sound, and definitely did not know where he came from.
“I think this cat wanted to get away for a while and got lost on his way,” said Elijah Lattimore, freshman.
Halls knew Kevin was hers by simply looking at him, but she was also able to identify him by the scanner she had put on him when first adopting him.
“I don’t really think this cat knew what he was doing, leaving from his owner at any point in time,” said India Smith, senior.
Kevin wanted to get out and play, we can simply tell by when he was found whining for food and his owner. People will say that is is impossible for this cat to have lived, but cats do hunt and he could have simply ate mice and lizards that were around.
