Baby Found in car seat alone

A tragic incident happened south of Salt Lake City late March 6 involving Lily Groesbeck, an 18-month-old baby and her mother, while traveling back from her grandparents house.

Police say Groesbeck is a very luck girl since she was found dangling in a car seat unconscious but still alive with her dead mother in the driver’s seat. Groesbeck was in the car by herself for 14 hours with no food or water. It was hard for anyone to notice the baby in the car because the car was flipped completely over.  When Groesbeck was found, she was wearing only a flannel onesie and no hat or gloves.

To get the medical attention Groesbeck needed, officers formed a long line to get her in the medics’ hands. Two days after Groesbeck was found, she was recovering in a hospital. She ended up having some head injuries. Authorities still do not know how she survived with no food, water or enough clothes in frigid weather.

“I truly believe this child had a lot of love coming from God to live through this tragic event,” said Magic Leach, senior.

As Groesbeck and her mother, Lynn Groesbeck, were driving, Lynn struck a

concrete barrier on a bridge and careened into the river.  Investigators do not know the cause. There were no skid marks, but the midsize car had signs of mechanical failure. Police do not suspect drugs or alcohol, but are awaiting toxicology results.  Lynn Groesbeck might have been tired or distracted, but authorities are not ruling anything out.

“I think the mother just simply got distracted by something going on around her. I feel it was just a wreck gone wrong for the mother,” said Mashayla Wright, freshman.

Even though there was a lot of traffic, no one saw the wreck because the barrier was blocking the whole car. If a fisherman had not seen the car Saturday morning, it could have been hours before the car was found.

“I think this really is a miracle, and knowing this child lived just makes it even more amazing,”said Halimat Oloko, freshman.

As of now Groesbeck is living with her two grandparents on her mother’s side. She is not in the hospital anymore, but will take medicine for the pain and injuries that she had.
