Senior Spotlight: Jayvon Coleman

Throughout high school, students achieve and extend themselves thoroughly; Senior Jayvon Coleman has pushed himself to perform excellence throughout his four years of high school. He has expressed that discipline and staying focused is something that he is grateful he has learned. 

“I tried my best throughout high school by staying focused and disciplined,” said Jayvon Coleman.

Teachers at Athens Drive have helped Coleman by pushing him, many of his teachers valued their time with him. One specific Athens Drive High School teacher who inspired Jayvon the most was Dan Rockwell. Not only were teachers inspiring but so were coaches.

“He is one of the most hard-working, dedicated students I have ever come across. He constantly brings a positive attitude and good energy to any situation he is put in. I, as his coach, was extremely grateful to have the opportunity to help him out in the sport of track and field,” said Ross Kennel. 

During Coleman’s years at Athens Drive High School, Track and Field was an important part of the school. Jayvon Coleman ran the three-hundred and the four-hundred During his practice, Jayvon achieved a time of 38.21 seconds in the 300. 

“My favorite memory of high school would be track and field. When I first started I didn’t know anyone, but as time went on I started to get comfortable with the people around me which made track enjoyable,” said Coleman. 

Aside from track, Coleman has had many classes, but one distinct class was different for him. Physical science was a difficult subject during his junior year; he found the units difficult to comprehend, but he pushed through this adversity to receive the grade he desired. Jayvon strides to study mechanical engineering at Wake Tech Community College. 

High school for Coleman was not only track and class but also a time with family and friends. The memories of going out with family to eat and simply being together are a vital part of who he is as a person. 

“I was raised by a single mother of three. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we moved from Fayetteville, and it took me some time to get out because I didn’t know anyone,” said Coleman. 

Being a freshman in high school during the pandemic was a rough experience for Coleman but as he experienced that, he stayed attentive to school, track, and family which is how he made the best experience out of the difficult conditions. 

  “For the freshmen, have discipline at all times but also have fun. You’re young and you have plenty of time to figure out what you want to do, just staying consistent and focused,” said Coleman. 

Jayvon has touched many hearts as they have touched his, his time at Athens Drive High School will be valued by students, teachers, and staff. Coleman will continue to embrace himself and change his and others’ perspectives in the real world. 

“Jayvon is a very respectful, kind, and encouraging student to every person he meets. He works incredibly hard in his classes and is a model of success. I am proud of Jayvon and all that he has accomplished here at Athens. He is going to have an awesome future that will impact other people. He will be missed,” said Dan Rockwell.
