Athens Drive took a step forward toward academic integrity with the formation of an
Honor Council and a new academic code that was placed into effect at the start of the 2013-2014 school year. The Honor Council is a new teacher-student organization at Athens with members
whose goals are to increase student awareness of the different forms of cheating and promote
academic integrity within the student body. With the increased awareness created this year
regarding the academic code, the Honor Council hopes to spread academic integrity among all
the classrooms at Athens Drive.
One of the teachers that helped create the Honor Council is Mrs. Williams, who hopes
that by the creation of the Honor Council, students will become more aware of the Honor Code
and choose to follow it throughout high school.
“The Honor Council was formed mostly by teachers and administrators after they started talking about academic integrity. Teachers nominated students that they thought both showed academic integrity themselves and were concerned about it throughout the rest of the school,” said Mrs. Williams, US History teacher.
Prior to joining the Honor Council, all the members went through a rigorous background check to ensure that they were fit for the Honor Council and would be able to properly convey the importance of academic integrity to the rest of the student body.
The students on the Honor Council this year are sure to have a positive impact on the
student body and hope that next year new members will be able to join them in reaching their
goal of academic integrity.
“Since this is my last year at Athens, and it is only the inaugural year of The Council, basically my only goal is to set the foundation for others who will come after me. Hopefully, the leadership that succeeds me will only strengthen the value of having this Council,” said Tre Bell, senior.
If one wants to join the honor council next year then they will have to undergo a rigorous background check and have recommendation from your teachers.
Aside from posting the honor code in classrooms, in order to make an even more profound impact on each class, the Honor Council presented to the student body Sept. 4 to the seniors, Sept. 5 to the juniors, and Sept. 9 to the sophomores. By the end of the school year the ADHS Honor Council hopes that they will have met all of their goals and influence students to make the right decision when it comes to academic integrity.
