    Scholarship memorizes Dr Hedrick’s life

Dr. James E. Hedrick, Jr. passed away unexpectedly on August 2, 2016, while out jogging “in a last ditch effort to fend off mortality,” according to his obituary. He was born  November 22, 1953 in Danville, Va., where he excelled in athletics and earned the nickname “Bull” for trampling another player in baseball. He went on to play football at Randolph-Macon College where he pledged Kappa Alpha. He became an English teacher and football coach at his alma mater, George Washington High School. He later  went on to become principal of Green Hope High School in 2005, then Athens Drive High School in 2014. He married Dr. Camille Holmes Hedrick, Principal of Panther Creek High School.

Shernita Telfair, counselor at Athens, worked with Hedrick for 11 years before passing.

“I felt like he was a family member because I knew him for years,” said Telfair.

“If you needed something from Dr. Hedrick and you asked he would try to make sure that he could help you out,” she said.

“His favorite quote of all time is was by Tim Russert, ‘The best exercise for the heart is reaching out and helping somebody.’ He truly believed that and tried to live his life according to that.”

This scholarship recognizes outstanding high school students from schools in the Wake County Public School System that have Parent Teacher Association (PTA) or Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) units that are members of the Wake County PTA Council. If one is uncertain as to whether your school’s PTA/PTSA unit is a member of the Wake County PTA Council, please check with your unit president or treasurer to determine your eligibility to apply.

The awards, which may vary in size from $1,000 up to $5,000 in value, will be announced in May 2017. Award checks will be issued in June 2017, and these checks will be made payable to both the scholarship winner and the winner’s post-secondary school. Therefore, the student(s) receiving these scholarships will need to work with the Bursar’s office at their post-secondary school to ensure that the funds are appropriately applied to the student’s account. This scholarship application must be completed online at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/HedrickScholarship2017.

The application tool will close on Sunday, April 16, 2017, at 9 p.m. This is the evening before traditional WCPSS students return to school from Spring Break. No late applications will be accepted. Applicants will be informed of scholarship decisions via email no later than close of business on Friday, May 5, 2017. All decisions of the scholarship awards by Wake County PTA Council will be final and not open to further review or discussion.
