Athens Drive introduces animal science to curriculum

There are many science courses offered at Athens, but so far none have focused on the science of animals. Recently, when students signed up for classes this year they were given the opportunity to choose animal science as one of their choices for an elective in the 2017-2018 school year.

“The new animal science program will be really good because it will offer the opportunity for students to study areas other than health for people,” said Megha Iyer, sophomore.

This new animal science program at Athens Drive is an opportunity for students to earn their veterinary assistant credentials. However, students will need to join the Health Science Academy in order to do so. If students choose to join the Health Science Academy and pursue the animal science pathway, they will complete job shadowing and a 135 hour internship experience.

Many academic institutions such as North Carolina State University (NCSU) as well as industry partners such as independent veterinarians are aiding in the development and student support of the animal science curriculum.

Animal science 1 and 2 will build on one another. The course encompasses anatomy and physiology of several species and smaller animals, covering a broad range of material. In order to become a veterinary assistant, students will need to take the veterinary assistant course to receive the required certification.

“The animal science program fits well into our magnet theme of medical science and global health initiatives. It fits also with the One Health concept, how animals, environment and human interact with one another in regards to medicine and health,” said Tonya Hinton, Magnet Coordinator.

Athens Drive High School is just moments away from the nationally recognized NCSU College of Veterinary Medicine. It will give students a unique and valuable opportunity to pursue a career in this medical pathway.

“Not every student is interested in learning about human services, but they may still want to pursue a career in the health field, this new program for animal science will create a broader choice of education which will be great for Athens,” said Iyer.
