Volleybros shakes the school once again with surprising outcome

Volleybros, still new to Athens, is quickly becoming more well-known amongst the students.  Each year since 2015, more students have been coming out and participating in the event.  This year marks the third annual volleybros tournament hosted by the student council’s executive board who organize and run the event.

As an overview of the event, there was a consolation bracket and a winners bracket.  The team “Unforgiven,” made up of seniors, won the consolation bracket while the team “Oak Nuggins,” made up of sophomores took the crown in the winner’s bracket.  This is the first year in volleybros history that an underclassmen team has won the whole tournament.

In other events held at Athens, such as powderpuff, it is usually a tradition that an upperclassmen team wins.  However, there has been many changes made to traditions this year as underclassmen have won both powderpuff and volleybros.  A major reason for this is due to unbiased referees that have been playing fairly by the rules and not just calling in favor of the upperclassmen.

“A couple of years ago my sister started volleybros and I see how it is progressing.  We are making shirts, we advertise a lot better for the event now than we how we used to when first starting out.  People want to join and take part in the fun and I think that volleybros is only going to get bigger and bigger here at Athens,” said Carleigh Hiscock, senior.

There is a rulebook in place for volleybros that was created three years ago by our former student council executive board.  Teams must be formed of at least six players from the same grade level.  If there is more than one team per grade level, grade levels will form a bracket to determine the one team that will play in the school bracket.

Coaches for the teams consist of members of the Athens Drive Women’s Volleyball Team.  They will determine the teams at the first practice.  If there is not enough for more than one team, than that team will receive a bye until the school bracket.

Players must pay a fee of $15 to include admission fee and the cost of class t-shirts.  Each class gets their own individual colored shirts; seniors get royal blue, juniors get orange, sophomores get light blue and freshmen get white.   Volleybros games start promptly at 6:00 p.m. in the upper gym every year.

“Volleybros represents a good opportunity to get men’s intramural volleyball started here at Athens Drive because it is at some schools and it can be like lacrosse and how that started out as an intramural and led it to becoming an actual sport here,” said Christopher Remaley, math teacher and student council advisor.
