Stress of college applications way down on seniors

With high school coming to a close for seniors, many are working hard to secure their future. Many seniors have been riddled with anxiety and stress over where they are heading after high school whether it be a university, technical school or trade school. Applications are necessary for anybody attending any type of school after gaining their GED.

College applications start the summer before senior year and go throughout much of the first semester. Seniors can apply through the College Application of North Carolina (CFNC), the College APP or on college websites. Each college asks similar basic questions that they need users to fill out before they are able to apply. They also require a resume about what the student did throughout high school. The resume needs to include classes taken, grades, clubs and sports that the user was involved in before applying to the university.

“The best thing you can do when you get deferred is to call the admissions office and see how to strengthen your application,” said Shernita Telfair, school counselor.

Getting into one’s college of choice does not always happen. If this is the case, the university may defer the student, which means that they have postponed reviewing the early admission and will review it with the regular admission pool. Regular admission deadlines are usually later in the year than early admissions deadlines. Students come under a lot of stress due to the waiting process, which could be months before they hear back from a university or multiple universities.

“I sent an application to Stanford and I heard back within a couple hours,” said Travis Warren, senior. “They took no time to reject me.”

The waiting process for hearing back from a university can take anywhere from a day to a couple of  months. The reason colleges may take a long time to hear back from is because they have thousands of applications to look through. Reviewing one application can be a huge process for a college, let alone thousands of them. They go through each class a student has taken in high school and each grade the student got. Colleges go through exam scores, extracurricular activities and teacher recommendations. Not only do they go through all this, they go through it multiple times to get a good assessment of the individual and make sure that they did not miss anything.

Universities put a lot into deciding who they want to attend their school. Good grades alone are not enough to make the cut. Students must be well-rounded in everything they do. Colleges want diversity on their campuses, they do not want too many people with the same interests and characteristics.

Most early college admissions closed on Oct. 15 and the latest that the regular admissions close in March.
