North Carolina State University (NCSU) students held a staged die-in at Student Union on Sept. 23. Students protested over the recent death of Keith Lamont Scott, who was shot by the police in Charlotte.
Demonstrators wore black and gathered at Wolf Plaza, then marched to the Talley Student Center for the die-in embodying the effects of police brutality. NC State students sang ‘Lift Every Voice’, an African American anthem, as they came together to protest.
“This is the first time (our protests have) been to this level. Because, we’re fed up as a community and we’re ready to do something about it as students,” said Timira Conley, an NC State junior according to ABC 11.
Authorities have said that a black police officer shot Scott who is black, because he had a gun. Scott’s family has said that he had no gun and that he was reading a book when officers approached him.
According to Cable News Network (CNN), attorney Justin Bamberg who represents Scott’s family stated that it is unclear in the dashcam and body camera what and if Scott had anything in his hand.
About 300 students participated in this protest. Various signs were held up during the protest including, “Black Lives Matter,” “White Silence Costs Black Lives” and “Stop Killing Us.”
Students also used the hashtag #WeStandWithCharolotte. Students continue to protest by having a voice online. NC State’s tweet reading, “Students fill @NCStateUnion in a peaceful really to show solidarity for Charlotte, #WeStandWithCharlotte.”
